| Aim of Our
Comenius Project The aim of the
project is to facilitate and foster an appreciation of other cultures within the EU.
It is envisaged that the children will take part in
a variety of learning activities that will be designed to develop and foster a greater
awareness and understanding of cultural similarities and difference. This learning process
will, we believe, enhance the personal development of the children involved and lead to a
greater understanding and appreciation of our own culture and of other cultures.
We are in the process of setting up 'epal' links
with these countries and to date we have received artwork from the children in our
Romanian partner school. We are using our school website to display and share much of what
we do from day to day in our school.
The results of the project will also be displayed on
the website as part of the information sharing process.
The children have outlined what they have done so
far and what they hope to learn from the project below.
Comenius Romanian
Project
Our school is doing a
Comenius project. Holy Family Senior School is going to e-mail countries all over Europe.
In particular, we are going to email Poland, Germany, Czech Republic and Romania. Ms.
Clifford and Mrs. Ryans classes are emailing Romania. So that we could have a little
information, we decided to do a project on Romania. We researched Romanian culture, money,
music, history, geography, and monarchy.
When
we (Mrs. Ryans and Ms. Cliffords) had researched all that information, we put
it together to form a project. You can see it here on the Web site.
In fact, it was
really Ms. Cliffords class who worked. But it wasnt the other classes fault,
Mrs. Ryan had fractured her arm and so could not help.
Mrs. Ryan has
visited Romania and she says what struck her was a field full of sunflowers, just full of
sunflowers, bobbing and facing the sun.
When we commence
emailing Romania this term we will be using our computer lab. They are using a laptop.
They will also use a camera we presented to the principal that we presented in January
2001. Now we can see the pictures that they take!
The project has
helped us a lot to understand other cultures, and has helped form a bond between ourselves
and other countries. We hope that some day we can foster strong bonds between ourselves
and all the other countries all over the world.

Comenius Czech
Republic Project
We launched our Comenius
project recently. At first we didn't know anything about the Czech Republic until we
started our project. After thorough researching we learned a great deal about their
country and culture. We learned about what they eat , what they wear and about their
language. We learned that they like to eat Calta (bread) and Cuba (a pudding which is made
from barley, mushrooms and milk) at Christmas.
December 24th, 25th
and 26th are the official holidays of the season . This is how you say Happy
Christmas in Czech "Stastne a vesele vanoce a stastny novy rok". reat feasts
take place.
The beautiful city of Prague
is the Czech Republic's capital city. Its government is a Parliamentary Republic. Our
teachers Mrs Darmody and Mr Connolly enjoyed all the exciting research along with our
class. This term we hope to E-Mail one of the schools in the Czech Republic and send them
some of our art, poetry and maybe some creative writing.
We know our teachers are
going to Prague. We hope they have an exciting time and that they won't forget us.

Comenius
Project on Germany
During the research for our
German project, we looked up different sources of German history such as Berlin wall, St.
Nicolas and we learned about interesting German people. People such as Bach, Wagner,
Handel and Becker.
At the launch of our
Comenius project we put our project on display in the front hall of the school to view.
The project appeared on the
local paper called the "Clare Champion".
"I liked researching
the project because we were finding out facts about Germany," says Sarah Bailey.
"I liked
researching about German history," says Ailís Burke.
